UC or IBS?
Hello
I'm a 56 year-old man and have a history of ulcerative colitis, which was initially diagnosed, via sigmoidoscopy, several years ago.
More recently, I appeared to present with similar symptoms to the UC I had previously had. I was informed that the results of another sigmoidoscopy was negative for UC. At the time, I had to have a CT scan, because the endoscope could not be inserted fully: this result was negative, too.
My symptoms worsened over the coming weeks, to the point where I am now having painful, bloody, diarrheal, bowel movements around 15 times every 24 hours (throughout the night, daytime). This is quite exhausting and debilitating. I have lost weight and now have spots appearing on my body! My GP prescribed prednisalone for 7 days, in an effort to relieve the symptoms, but suggested stopping these 7 days prior to another sigmoidoscopy I am having, tomorrow. The pred did not appear to lessen the symptoms.
I am drinking around 4/5 pints of fluid each day.
I suppose my main question is: If there was no sign of UC a few weeks ago (even with diarrhea, although only having 3/4 bowel movements during the morning), what is the likelihood of it being UC this time?
Many thanks!

Ulcerative colitis can return I am unsure if there is any data to give you some idea about what is common, contact Crohns & Colitis UK - they will be able to give you more information. Check out their website here
