Side effects of pain killers

I have been prescribed many different pain relief tablets, the most recent being naproxen and high dose codeine. I also take a stomach settler with them. But as every type I have tried they badly upset my stomach including chronic constipation.
Is there anything i can take that won't cause these problems?
