Why can't I loose weight

Hi, my weight is static and has been for at least 10 months, my BMI is over 40 and I am desperate to loose weight, part of that quest led me to being diagnosed with ME/CFS in April when all my tests including thyroid function came back 'normal'. I eat a sensible balanced diet and walk about 7000 steps a day, I do get wipeout if I over exercise or overdo things and feel I am in a catch 22 as I know loosing weight will help me with my ME. Any thoughts? :?

Re: Why can't I loose weight

Hello suedodkin

I am sorry to hear how you are struggling with your weight. You are doing well to be managing 7000 steps a day. Using a pedometer is a helpful objective measure in CFS to avoid unintentionally overdoing things as well as the usual use of doing enough. Many of my non-CFS patients who have no abnormal fatigue only do 3000-4000 steps a day!

Weight loss occurs simply when you eat less energy than you are burning up. As there is little scope for you to burn up more, the only way for you to lose weight is to cut back on what you are eating and drinking. In the States they are collecting data of over 10,000 who have lost weight and maintained that loss. This gives clues as to what helps and this includes:

1. Having a breakfast
2. Having a low fat diet
3. Self monitoring
4. Planning ahead with menu, shopping etc

Additionally, support is vital for success. This can be anything from attending a commercial group, doing online diets, enlisting family or friends or getting help from a health professional, such as the nurse from your GP surgery, or dietitian.

Good luck
