Re: Borderline Personality Disorder

Hello Richard
Thanks for posting on the online mental health clinic.

I am sorry to read that you find that there are limited services to treat your mental health condition - borderline personality disorder (BPD), in the Suffolk area.

Its sad that you feel a burden - I presume you may be referring to your family
If that is the case it may be that if your mood is currently low, it is natural that you might have this negative perception - but at a time when your mood is lighter it may be that you would see this differently.

Families can feel frustrated when one of their members have ongoing mental health problems that don't seem to be improving - very often this may be due to lack of support from service providers, lack of knowledge of mental health problems or just plain not knowing how best to help their loved one to get better.

Richard, you have shown courage and willingness to help yourself by posting on here.
Please consider galvanising that courage and motivation by thinking of ways that you might try to improve your situation by self help exercises and also to look at ways that you could influence the mental health services in your area to improve their treatment options for BPD.

I notice on the mental health trust for your area that they have User/Carer Scrutiny Groups for both east and west Suffolk - they have a list of regular meetings:
http://www.nsft.nhs.uk/en/Service-User- ... iny-Group/
- would you consider attending one such meeting to raise your concerns about lack of services, perhaps bringing a friend/family member along for support?

Another route would be to lobby your local MP to raise awareness of the lack of services in your area for this mental health disorder.

I am not sure if you are aware of the National Institute for Clinical Guidance (NICE) recommendations for the treatment of BPD, but if not it would be a good starting point to read it and to use it in any petition or request for services in your area.
The guidance recommends:
The role of specialist personality disorder services within trusts
● Mental health trusts should develop multidisciplinary specialist teams and/or services for people
with personality disorders. These teams should have specific expertise in the diagnosis and
management of borderline personality disorder
- see this link for further information: http://guidance.nice.org.uk/CG78/QuickR ... df/English.

This link to the NHS choices information on BPD which outlines current approaches to the treatment of BPD, including using the Care Programme approach if your BPD is moderate to severe, may also be helpful:
http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Borderline ... ction.aspx

Richard, there is always some help out there and services for BPD are continuing to improve as information and research on this subject continues to grow - but sometimes you do have to keep knocking on doors to get the right treatment for you - so don't give up.

I hope some of this information helps and I wish you all the best in your quest to get the services you need to improve your mental health :)
Best wishes

Re: Borderline Personality Disorder

Thank you for your response however it appears to come down to funding
I am in contact with local NSFT and the NHS and whilst it seems to be that
BPD services are much needed I and many others are desperate
