enlarged prostate and BPH
my husband is self catheterizing after 1 month of indwelling cath. as he has not got back his own abilty to "pee". He had retention after a new knee and his bladder was stretched. he has had 2 or 3 small "pees" by himself but he is worried he will never get back his usual abilty he had before the op. He has been selfcath. for 3 weeks at present. Must he be patient?

Re: enlarged prostate and BPH
Sometimes after an aneasthetic men find that they are unable to pee normally and go into retention. If he is still unable to pee normally and has to use the intermittant catheters to empty his bladder I think it is time to ask to see a Urologist as some men may need surgical intervention to clear the blockage caused by the prostate. This is a common problem in men. About a third of men over the age of 50 have an enlarged prostate which is a normal part of the aging process in me.

I fully agree.
Intermittent self catheter should have got the bladder going if it was going to .
He probably needs a TURP or similar procedure to sort things out unless bladder was stretched to >2 litres.
This is common and bladder outflow surgery usually gets things better.
