Large fibroids

Hello.

I am a 38 year old black woman with several fibroids. The largest is about 73 mm by 66 mm and another is about 79 mm. I have been advised to have either a myomectomy or a hysterectomy. I am not keen on surgery and would prefer a less invasive option. I am also anaemic and taking iron suppliments as I cannot be operated on until my iron level rises to normal.

I have read that fibroids are more common in black women and do not necessarily cause harm. I do not bleed heaviliy nor do I have severe pain when menstrating. Furthermore, my abdomen is not extended or swollen. The fibroids were discovred on a routine check. Do I really have to have the operation?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Correct, the other options include uterine artery embolization or MR focussed ultrasound. These are not surgical BUT all options including surgery carry a risk of infection, pain, scarring bleeding etc. Hysterectomy is a tiny risk of all fibroid treatments. If you are managing, there is not need to intervene, although the fibroids could cause infertility/miscarriage, simply just by their presence. At 38, hysterectomy as a first line treatment is a bit drastic. The risk of cancerous change in a fibroid is really low too.
