Rectal irrigation
Hi, I've posted these questions previously but inadvertently deleted them. I'm desperate for some answers.
I have a connective tissue disorder, am middle-aged and have had four surgeries for different pelvic floor prolapses, including a rectopexy for intussusception four years ago. At various times, I have had to self catheterise.
Currently, I'm using rectal irrigation, which is the only way I can have a bowel movement. These are my questions:
Can irrigation be used long~term?
Can it lead to damage sphincters?
My bladder is beginning to feel as though it is prolapsing - could the pressure from the irrigation be contributing to this.
Can the cones be re-used safely? Having been unable to have regular bms for a long time, I'm now getting into a regular pattern of going almost every day. However, the irrigation packs only have 14 cones and my practice will only prescribe one pack each month. So, washing them is my only option.
Finally, I'm being considered for tibial stimulation.Do any of you have experience of using these for {as my consultant says} 'a bottom that won't work?
Thank you

Re: Rectal irrigation/tibial stimulation
Hi
I'm surprised that no one has answered any of my questions about rectal irrigation. Is this because it is an unusual procedure? How about the tibial stimualtion - has anyone any insight?
Thanks
Kathy

Currently, I'm using rectal irrigation, which is the only way I can have a bowel movement. These are my questions:
Can irrigation be used long~term? Yes
Can it lead to damage sphincters? No, as long as you are gentle.
My bladder is beginning to feel as though it is prolapsing - could the pressure from the irrigation be contributing to this. No
Can the cones be re-used safely? I would not see a major problem as long as you don't keep using them
Having been unable to have regular bms for a long time, I'm now getting into a regular pattern of going almost every day. However, the irrigation packs only have 14 cones and my practice will only prescribe one pack each month. So, washing them is my only option.
Finally, I'm being considered for tibial stimulation.Do any of you have experience of using these for {as my consultant says} 'a bottom that won't work? Yes, this can work. Your GP should refer you to a specialist anorectal unit.
Thank you
