Dear Pamela,

Your GP is correct, part of the healing process of wounds involves dilatation of the surrounding blood vessels so that they can deliver a good supply of oxygen as well as other nutrients to the wound to promote healing. This will often be seen as a uniform pink blush around the wound edge.

As the wound heals the surrounding blood vessels will start to shrink, although this can be unpredictable and take many months.

It is always a good idea to get the wound swabbed regularly, particularly if you get any pain, to look for signs of infection.

Have a chat with your practice nurse to discuss the best type of dressing for your wound. Sometimes adjusting dressings can be beneficial for slow to heal wounds.
