Discoid eczema

My 3 year old Granddaughter was diagnosed by a dermatologist 6 months ago with discoid eczema. She has large patches on her legs & smaller ones on her arms. The only treatment that seems to control the condition is steroid cream. Obviously my daughter is worried about long term use. Are there any other treatments available?

Re: Discoid eczema

Hello :)
The treatment of eczema with topical steroids is very important - there are many other suggested treatments that you will see mentioned, often because avoiding steroid side effects, especially in youngsters, is a concern.
"Steroid phobia" can be a real problem if it means the correct treatment is avoided or not used adequately. Used as prescribed, topical steroids are the "gold standard" for eczema.
They should always be used with moisturiser, as topical steroids cause drying of the skin. Regular use of moisturiser otherwise, without topical steroids, will help prevent further eczema.
I hope that helps :!:

Re: Discoid eczema

Hi There,

For children it is obviously very important to get eczema under control. In addition to regular use of moisturisers, the following two tips may help...

Firstly, combining a stronger steroid at the weekend with a milder steroid for maintenance during the week may also help.

Secondly, I often use a topical product called Protopic ointment, which has a paediatric strength. Although similar to strength of topical steroids it lacks the potential for skin thinning and may be an option, if gaining control of eczema is proving problematic.

I hope this helps
