Lamotrigine

Hi - I have recently been diagnosed with mild epilepsy - ie I don't lose consciousness, I have suffered since I child but it was never picked I am now in my early 20s. I started 6 months ago on Lamotrigine building up to 100mg a day and on my last visit my consultant increased it to 200mg - even though I haven't suffered from any seizures.... or rather I feel that I can control them from occurring now. Is the dosage dictated by the severity of the seizure and why would he have thought necessary to increase the dosage? Thanks

Re: Lamotrigine

Hi Justdiagnosed

I can make a guess as to why your consultant increased your lamotrigine. When epilepsy medicines are first given, then are given at a tiny dose, and gradually increased to a level that is most suitable for your particular circumstances. This is to reduce the risk of side-effects. Although some adults will stay seizure free on 100 mgs of lamotrigine, many will need more to keep them seizure free. And some adults can take upto 400 mgs. That's probably why your consutlant thinks you need more than 200 mgs.

If you are concerned about this dose, talk to your doctor or epilepsy specialist nurse. They syhould be able to explain their reasons for increasing your meds.
