Baby allergic to wheat milk egg slow weight gain

Hi! Anyone have any advice-my 8month old son has had skin prick test allergic to milk egg and wheat. Vomited after avocado (tried two times). He has moderate/severe eczema and skin reactions to foods as well as vomiting. He is on the 2nd percentile and it's a struggle to get him to eat and he only takes a couple of oz of prescribed formula (still breast feeding and exclusively bf to this point). Any help suggestions how to entice him to eat and any foods that may be good? Or any advice/ tips on safely weaning him?

Hello

This is a very tricky question to answer and one should never ignore the problem of slow weight gain in infants.

1. Vomiting to Avocados can potentially become more severe

2. For slow weight gain certain formulas may be better

3. For multiple food allergies and weaning advice in an 8 month old I would really suggest to see an Paediatrician AND/or a Allergy Specialist Dietitian to prevent long term feeding/eating difficulties.

Good luck!

Hi

Agree with Carina that if you are concerned about his growth and he has multiple food allergies it would be wise to speak to GP about a referral to a Paediatric Dietitian and/or Paediatrician ideally with an interest in Allergy for further advice and support with weaning.

When introducing a new food begin with a small amount of the food and gradually increase the amount over 3-4 days whilst monitoring his skin.

With regards to which foods to try now is the ideal time to introduce protein-rich foods e.g. chicken, turkey, lamb, beef, pulses into his diet, many of these foods are also high in iron and energy. The ultimate aim is to offer him a few different food types at each meal e.g. protein-rich foods, fruits and vegetables (cooked until soft) and carbohydrates rice foods e.g. rice or potatoes although I imagine that feels some way away.

There are milk, egg and wheat free alternatives such as breads, pasta, yoghurts and cheeses available from supermarkets, health foods shops and online that you could try introducing too. Always check the ingredients label before giving any packaged foods to check that it doesn't contain any of the foods that he is allergic to.

It can be a challenge to persuade an infant of 8 months to take a reasonable of hypoallegenic formula. Like Carina says there are certain formulas that are more appropriate for babies with eczema and faltering growth. It would be worth talking to your GP to check that you have the correct formula on prescription.

Many of the companies who make hypoallergenic milks produce very helpful weaning booklets with recipes ideas of how to incorporate the formula in with solids to increase the volume consumed.

Good luck
