Does acne affect your body image? Help psychologists test an online self-help intervention
Hi,
My name is Kate Adkins and I'm a researcher and a Trainee Clinical Psychologist at the University of Sheffield and within the NHS.
Having lived with acne most of my life, and worked in physical and mental health services, I'm really aware of the potential for acne to affect how people feel about their bodies, and dissatisfied with the lack of research into ways to improve body image for people living with acne. I've therefore adapted an online writing intervention targeting body image in adults with a range of skin conditions.
I need the help of adults living with acne to help me test whether this self-help intervention could help other people with acne see their bodies more positively.
Can I take part?
Yes, if you are 18 or over and have a skin condition that affects how you feel about your body, we would really value your participation.
What does it involve?
You will be asked to complete three 15-minute writing tasks spread out over a week.
You will also be asked to complete questionnaires about your skin and body image (before the first writing task, after the last writing task and 1 month later).
As this is a Randomised Controlled Trial, we are comparing the writing intervention to another set of writing tasks. You will therefore be randomly allocated to either the intervention or the non-intervention writing tasks. However, all participants will be given a copy of the intervention to download.
As a thank you for taking part, you will be able enter a prize draw for a £50 voucher of your choice.
Please let me know if you experience any problems completing the study or have any questions.

I wish you the best of luck with your survey, Kate. Also, I did not have acne or suffer spots as a teenager - and don't even now - BUT I do know acne is deeply distressing and lowers self esteem. There are treatments available. And the good thing about teenagers using social media is they can research different methods of skin treatment for their acne. But there needs to be a safety net, so that they don't buy a product thinking a skin peel will reduce their acne. Now, I am deeply against skin peels: they are nasty and unnecessary. Taking off a layer of skin sounds horrific and no one with acne should EVER consider doing so.
Good luck again!
Good luck again!

Major findings of the study revealed that acne has an adverse effect on body image and quality of life of adolescents and young adult, which dermatologists should include in their treatment strategies to prevent psychological repercussions of acne
