Re: brown pigmentation spots

Hi There,

Pigmented marks /spots/blemishes on the face are common post sun exposure. Freckles tend to come in the summer and reduce in number over the winter. If you have permanent pigmented spots then firstly it important to get them checked. The vast majority of these brown flat spots are called solar lentigos, or flat seborrhoeic keratoses. However, as always, there is also the potential for a change in the skin to form an abnormal freckle called lentigo maligna, particularly if you have had a lot of sun exposure. Lentigo maligna tends to have variable pigmentation and look different to the rest of the 'brown spots', whereas a solar lentigo tends to be uniformly one colour and look the same as others.

Treatment options will depend on the initial diagnosis. For all of these 'brown spots' it would be advisable to use high factor sunscreen and to be sun safe, wearing a hat and sunglasses etc.

If you have one brown spot that is different remember - 'odd one out - check it out'

Re: brown pigmentation spots

Hi
I wholeheartedly agree with Dr Bowling's comments. It is really important to appreciate that avoiding/minimising sun exposure is a really important lifestyle practice that can really help minimise the further development of such sun-induced pigmented areas.
If you're at all worried about anything on your skin, do go and see you GP sooner rather than later.
