Re: referral list for weight loss surgery

Hello Liz,

From your post it sounds like you would meet the NICE criteria for funding for weight loss (bariatric) surgery because of your BMI and health problems. You can get more information about accessing weight loss surgery from the NICE website (http://pathways.nice.org.uk/pathways/ob ... er-surgery).

There is an expectation that, before surgery, patients will have accessed 'tier 3' intensive weight management. These services provide support from dietitians, fitness specialists and psychologists/counsellors and it is an opportunity to make changes to your diet and lifestyle that will be helpful whether or not you proceed with surgery. Your GP will be able to tell you if there is a tier 3 weight management service in your area.

You need to be clear about the nature and limitations of bariatric surgery. It is not a magical answer to problematic eating so if you have any issues with emotional (comfort) eating or binge episodes these need to be tackled before surgery. There are a number of NHS and hospital websites about surgery (including the NHS Choices website) so do some reading and talk to your GP.
