Re: osteoarthritis in knees and weight
Hi Rachel,
Losing a stone in weight would be of huge benefit to your knees; studies have shown that even small changes in weight can have positive effects on knee pressure. Every 1lb you lose results in a 4lb reduction in knee pressure. So if you were to lose a stone you'd reduce the pressure on your knees by a whopping 4 stones!
One 2005 study found that losing 10 lbs in weight would equal 48,000 less pounds of pressure for every mile walked. If you multiply this figure by the number of miles you're likely to walk over the rest of your life it's easy to see why, if you're overweight, losing weight is a vital part of reducing knee pain.
I'm afraid I'm not able to speak about what your situation would be regarding a knee placement if your symptoms don't improve - that would be something you'd need to discuss with your GP/surgeon.
Hope this helps and good luck with the weight loss!
