Awful PMS

Hi

My friend suffers terribly with PMS. It's badly affecting her life every month. She's a married mum of two young boys and has a busy job too. She says that she feels so emotional during her PMS week each month, that she struggles to cope and it's affecting her life, both at home and at work.
She says she'd even consider having a hysterectomy if it meant she didn't have to suffer with PMS each month.

She's been to see her GP but has simply been told to do some exercise (which she already does).

I understand that some sexual health clinics have experts who specialise in providing support and help to women who suffer badly with PMS, e.g. fitting a coil with additional hormones (she's a bit scared about the thought of having more hormones put into her body as she's concerned that this could make her more emotional), etc. Are you able to offer any suggestions as to who she could contact to obtain appropriate support please?

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated as it's just so awful knowing that she goes through this roller coster of emotions every month, putting an additional strain on her already stressful life.

Many thanks
Kath

Re: Awful PMS

PMS can indeed cause huge distress and is under reported, but can be treated. She should ask to be referred to a specialist, either at Sexual Health or gynaecology, depending on local expertise. The symptoms are due to fluctuating hormone levels produced by our ovaries. Adding in hormones in a way that levels off the fluctuations can be really helpful so she should not be afraid of taking hormones. There is a National Association for PMS (NAPS).
I hope this helps.
