oestrogen patches for severe PMS
Hi I was wondering and hoping someone could help advise me.
I have a very severe and crushing type of PMS (PMDD) Life becomes very dark for me and those around me when i'm at my worse and I would love to change this.
I have been to various G.Ps over the years and tried many different treatments, various pills and anti depressants. Sadly none of these treatments have helped. I have used a herbal tincture called agnus castus which has definitely regulated my periods naturally and helped somewhat but i still have some horrific mood swings.
My question is could an oestrogen patch that stabilises my hormones help my condition? I have read this is what the consultant in sexual health Peter Greenhouse recommends for women like myself however my G.P appeared none the wiser.
If this is a viable option for myself and other suffers, how do we go about trying it?
Thank you very much for your time.

Re: oestrogen patches for severe PMS
PMS can be triggered by the fluctuating hormone levels leading up to a period. Estrogen patches have been shown to be very useful by providing steady hormone levels. To prevent the estrogen stimulating the womb lining, some form of progestogen needs to be used as well. These would all need to be prescribed. If your GP is unsure about this then you should be referred to a specialist. There is a very good guidance on this on www.rcog.org.uk under "Green top Guidelines". There is also National Association for PMS (NAPS).
I hope this is helpful.
