Hi Megan,

Anxiety and panic attacks CAN affect you mentally.

General anxiety can cause problems with concentration, making you easily distracted, or you may experience your mind going blank.

Panic attacks can cause confusion because during an attack you will tend to over-breathe (hyperventilate). This will lead to you exhaling too much carbon dioxide, which will change the acidity of your blood; this can lead to confusion, as well as make the dizziness, palpitations and pins and needles worse.

You can tackle hyperventilation by holding your breath for as long as you can without feeling uncomfortable. Repeat a few times if possible, as this helps you to retain carbon dioxide. Another effective fix is to breathe in and out of a paper bag - as this makes you re-inhale the carbon dioxide you have exhaled, thus increasing the levels in your body.
