I have been living with this since my teenage. But now it seems like I have finally found a method to control them. Skincare for acne doesn’t have to be just a topical application. Rather all the products you use should be comedogenic in nature. These include face wash, moisturizer, gels, face masks with active ingredients such as salicylic acid, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and Retin A.

First of all, I want to clear the fact that there is no quick fix, treatment should continue for at least 8 -12 weeks and anybody saying otherwise is trying to make a fool out of you.

Consulting a Dermatologist/ Skin Specialist is a good option if your traditional methods have failed.

So, let’s begin

Pimples, medically known as Acne Vulgaris, are a problem faced by people of all age groups, unlike the popular belief. It can begin with the appearance of a few red raised spots around your mouth or chin and can result in anxiety or stress.

How does it happen?

Pores become blocked, causing pimples, called papules and pustules to form. There can be Whiteheads (Completely blocked pores) or Blackheads (partially blocked pores) which can trap a combination of oil, bacteria or dead skin cells.

What are the other complaints associated with pimples?

Itching, pigmentation or dry skin are generally associated with adult acne.

What are the contributing factors?

Hormone, stress and aggravation by external factors such as clothing/ medications.

Treatment of pimples?

Treatment includes

1. Topical Medications – Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid etc

2. Topical Antibiotics – Erythromycin, clindamycin etc (useful in inflammatory acne)

3. Retinoids – Derivatives of Vitamin A, unplug follicles and have anti-inflammatory properties.

People with dry skin benefit from creams and lotions of the above medications whereas oily skinned individuals benefit from gels.

Microdermabrasion and chemical peels can be helping in physically remoulding scars.

Do’s and Don’ts for pimples?

Don’t pick – it will make it worse and may exacerbate scarring.

Don’t over scrub – avoid harsh soaps, toners etc.

Dietary Habits – If you notice certain foods aggravate your acne, avoid them.

Hi Unobtanium,

Many people will look for a cure to acne by using external products. What is useful to know is why is your son (or anyone else) having acne? The skin is a way for the body to detox. Acne happens when the body is desperately trying to get read of a lot of toxins. Changing diet is critical and adding products on the skin will only try to cure the symptoms but not the cause. Gluten, dairy, chemical products, processed food...check if by removing those, your son's acne is reduced. Add cooked vegetables, green juice, good fats...it might increase the problem at the beginning (more detox) but reduce it after some time.

Hope this help.

As a naturopathic physician, I see skin problems as an external manifestation of an internal problem. With that perspective.
