Re: enlarged prostate- prognosis?

Brian
sounds like you have a big prostate that has regrown since your previous TURP operation.
You are now on combination medical treatment with an alpha blocker and 5ARI (doxasosin and finasteride)
I would get an ultrasound scan to estimate the prostate size now, a flow rate and residual volume and ask your urologist to consider urodynamics (bladder pressure testing) if results equivocal.
If the prostate gland is very large and obstructing then you probably need something done
If it is small then you might need another tablet to reduce your storage symptoms (frequency and urgency).

Hi Brian,

I've nothing further to add from the response you've received from Ben, but you may also find the following links to Prostate Cancer UK's publications on an enlarged prostate gland and a TURP operation:

I hope you find these useful.

Re: enlarged prostate- prognosis?

As a GP - I would probably try treating you without the investigations Ben suggests - yet. I would think about stopping the finasteride, switching your doxazosin to tamsulosin and adding an anti-muscarinic medication alongside to calm the bladder - eg solifenacion - you can take this combined in 1 tablet - Vesomni. That is providing you are emptying your bladder reasonably well.

If that didn't work, then you need a urologist to consider the investigations Ben suggests.

Also, think about what you drink - if you are frequent and urgent - are you drinking too much tea and coffee?? Just a thought...!
