Avoiding Kidney stones

Over the last 7-8 years I have periodically had painful kidney stones and in an NHS operation three were removed - at other times the stones passed naturally but not without real pain. I drink 2 litres of fluids a day. Can you advise any possible further measures I could take to avoid these please - Thank you

Re: Avoiding Kidney stones

my understanding is that for your typical calcium oxalate stone former (as opposed to more unusual stones such as urate), the only thing that has been reliably shown to reduce incidence of recurrent calculi is maintaining good fluid intake, particularly increasing this when exercising or in hot weather. Dietary manipulation rarely the answer. Sometimes people intuitively lower their calcium intake, but this can actually increase the risk of stones as calcium is needed to bind oxalate in the gut, and without calcium, oxalate absorption increase - so a normal calcium intake is needed.

Re: Avoiding Kidney stones

It might be worth checking your blood calcium and uric acid next time you have a blood test as there are some reasons for repeated kidney stones that can be helped with medications.
We usually do a 24 hour urine collection on repeated stone formers too.
