Urgency

I have never had any problem going to toilet, however now i get a bad pain in my abdomen and need to go urgently. Once i have been i never feel as though my bowel is fully empty and may go an hour later and pass a really small amount of faeces

Re: Urgency

Hi Simontink
your bowel transit may have slowed and you may be experiencing constipation. make sure you are drinking enough fluid (@ 1.5litres in 24 hours) and look at your diet to ensure you have the balance of soluble & insoluble fibre right (soluble fibre slows the bowel down whereas insoluble speeds things up). gelatin products also add to constipation (jelly sweets, marshmallows and boiled sweets are culprits for this). Try altering your position on the toilet, anatomically sitting position compresses the rectal / anal sphincters, so try to lift your knees higher than your hips and have your legs wider apart when trying to empty your bowel - this will mimic a squatting position which will help to open up the sphincters and make passage a lot easier. this position is best achieved by placing a rolled up towel under your feet to get the hips in a better position. The only caution to this is in people who have had total hip replacementsas it increases the risk of dislocation.
It can take several weeks to re balance your bowel habit.

Re: Urgency

Hi there, thank you for posting your question. You haven't said how old you are, but any change in bowel habit should be taken seriously. Can I ask you some further questions?

How old are you?
Do you ever have any diarrhoea / blood / slime?
How is your weight - up / down / steady?
Any other bowel problems?

Re: Urgency

Ask yourself what has changed/ The most likely thing is that somehting has happened to upset your bowels? If that is the cause, bring that back to mind and try to deal with that situation or use mindfulness techniques to help to think about it and find the optimal solution. The next possibility is that your diet has changed. .
