Atopic eczema

I'm 43 and have had severe eczema since birth. I've had a relatively stable patch but at the moment my skin is excruciatingly bad. It has flared up literally all over me. It is intensely itchy, in fact I've never known my skin to be as itchy as this. It is so sore I can barely wear clothes. I'm in tears all the time and had to have 2 days off work last week because I couldn't walk very well. I went to the doctor (in tears) and he gave me 5 days worth of prednisolone, cetraben and oil for the bath. That's it. I asked for betnovate (my normal ointment) and he said no. I don't know what to do with myself. I'm ripping my skin to shreds. I've cut my nails really short but in desperation find other things to scratch with. I suffer with depression anyway but this is bringing me right down. I'm driving my partner mad. I'm at the end of my tether and don't know what to do.

Re: Atopic eczema

Hi!

So so sorry to hear of the current condition! Is it your first time on prednisolone? If it's not over the same year and hasn't worked, may want to discuss alternative meds.. Also, any allergy test taken?

Take care,

Re: Atopic eczema

Thank you,

No, I quite often have to take prednisolone just to calm things down, but this time it' doesn't seem to be working. Saw my gp again and I've been referred to a specialist. I'm having to go to work like this and it's not doing my mental health any good either. So fed up

Re: Atopic eczema

Hugs! I heard from a dermatologist that prednisolone shouldn't be taken more than 4 times/year for a child (personal opinion) and if more than that is required, then need to explore alternative treatment. Hope it'd be better when you see a specialist.
