Hidden Side of Stroke

I am a stroke survivor of 6 years now. I visited my Consultant for my annual check-up last week and he said I was doing very well and in front of a an A'Level student, who wants to become a neurologist said that I was back to "normal".

I said apart from the cognitive problems - attention and concentration, memory, information processing and planning and organisation, yes on the outside, I look fully recovered but neurologically there will always be underlying issues, which no-one ever tells you about unless you go out there and find out for yourself, which I had to do.

Thank goodness for organisations such as Headway North London and Different Strokes.

I guess it depends on your definition of 'normal'! I agree, I don't think any survivor is unchanged, even though they may look the same on the outside.

Re: Hidden Side of Stroke

Thanks for taking the time to post here regarding how you feel after your stroke.

How you feel as a person post event such as a stroke is often overlooked or even asked about by health professionals.

Completely agree that charities and other support organisations are a blessing in terms of offering some insight and a sounding board for people recovering.

Wishing you all the best.

Re: Hidden Side of Stroke

Hello,
I'm pleased to hear that you are progressing well and have managed to get some support. Your frustrations about people not understanding the hidden side of stroke are unfortunately very common. One of my old colleagues here at Different Strokes always said that she found the Hidden side of Stroke much harder to deal with than her physical difficulties because people would hold a door open for her when she needed it but they were ignorant to what they couldn't see. We have a leaflet on the Invisible Side of stroke which I hope is some help. http://www.differentstrokes.co.uk/conte ... Stroke.pdf
We also have a helpline and a facebook group that you can join to chat to other people in the same situation.
01908 317618 or 0845 130 7172 and online chat via our website:http://www.differentstrokes.co.uk/
Best wishes
Jo
