Dry patches on skin

Hi I have been having these small dry patches on my skin, I'm not sure what it is I have been to the doctors but they were not much help.
They get a scaly white crust on top which I can peal off, once I peal that off they are red and slightly scaley they can also be itchy. I've had them all over my body hair face arms and legs. They last anywhere between 2 to 4 weeks. Sometimes I can go months with out having any then I'll get one after another for a couple of months. The doctor prescribed me betnovate cream which was ok I think it cleared them up quicker. I would just like to know what it is or what causes them. Any help or advice would be much appreciated
