smoking and dental issues

This happened a couple of weeks back. I noticed there was blood when brushing teeth. This was when I decided to go to meet the dentist. He told me that my gums are in bad shape and they needed treatment. The gum disease treatment was to clean the gums and give the medication to avoid infection. I always clean up real nice but I have no idea how this happened. The doctor said it was caused by smoking. well, I did smoke but not too often. I know people who have smoked away their life but didn't have a single problem with teeth. My cousin for example who was a chain smoker didn't have any problem with his teeth and let alone even a stain. He is now 62-years-old but his teeth look normal. I checked to see if my gums were weak but they were all fine. I have no idea how can this happen.
