Migraines or something else?

Hi,

Keep thinking I have some kind of migraine problem but they're never consistent or prolonged. I occasionally get these severe one-sided headaches; the pain is located slightly above and behind my right eye, spreading out to the back of my head, always on the right side. I don't know how to adequately explain the pain - it's intense and feels almost like an electric shock that spreads on the surface, but it can also feel quite deep in my head and as though small groups of pain linger in certain parts. It's always on the right side.

When they happen I usually have to go and sit down, waiting for it to pass. It happened once when I was talking to someone and it was so severe I couldn't focus on what they were saying at all.

When I have my regular headaches, I do have head pain on both sides but it's always worse on the right side, behind my eye. It throbs and aches and makes me feel like my right eye is going to burst.

I have other symptoms which may or may not be related. There are some which seem to coincide with the unilateral head pain so I thought I'd list them:

- Right eyelid is droopy in comparison to the left
- Right eyelid bulges out slightly more in the socket in comparison to the left
- Occasional ringing in right ear; begins with a total loss of hearing accompanied with high pitch ringing, hearing slowly returns after 10-20 seconds
- Occasional forehead twitching on the right side and tightness
- Nausea attacks
- Tiredness

I don't have the greatest mental health in the world, and it has gotten progressively worse over the last 6 months, alongside the severity of my physical symptoms. I am on antidepressants (sertraline). I used to worry about my health extensively. I have been neglecting caring about my health recently but that anxiety has sort of returned, which is why I'm posting I guess. I don't know if my declining mental health is caused by what's causing these symptoms, or if what's causing these symptoms is causing my mental health to decline. Maybe it's linked to the medication? I don't know.

These things have been happening for quite a while so I don't know if this warrants a visit to the GP. I feel like if it was genuinely serious I wouldn't have been suffering it for a while.

Sorry if this post is a bit pointless, but I'd just like to have some opinions or suggestions? Thanks for reading.

If this is useful: I'm 18 and female.

Hi magentamermaid

Thank you for your post. We would definitely recommend a visit to you GP and possibly your optician just to rule out any problems with your eyes/vision. If you struggle trying to remember everything you want to tell your GP, take someone with you or write everything down to try and keep on point.

Please let us know how you get on.

Kind regards

This is my 1st post on here .By now I hope you have seen a Gp and had some answers, but having lived with severe migraine for 30 plus years I have some knowledge - cluster headaches ,or even trimengial neuralgia which can often be misdiagnosed as migraine or cluster headaches. The neuralgia generally only affects one side and has all the symptoms you mention -except the eye popping out.Cluster headaches as the name suggests tend to come in clusters, then disappear ,often for months ,even years.Migraine ,as I expereince it is chronic and very affected by weather, stress ,eating certain trigger foods.Trimengial neuralgia can be absoultely excruciating and for me was much like being connected to a live socket. The distinguishing feature of this is it does not respond to convention painkillers and needs an anti seizure medication to resolve it.For me it follwed dental treatment and also can be worsened by getting chilled or draughts.
