Skin stripped off tongue and very painful

Help please. Background to problem
In November I had toothache and went to dentist. He said I had an abscess under one tooth and gave me antibiotics and said he would have to clean it and then later do a root canal work. I saw him again in beginning December and he said the infection had gone and he wanted to put antiseptic on it and then do root canal work in January. I told him my entire mouth was hurting, especially my tongue. He recommended corsodine toothpaste and mouthwash. I went back just before Christmas to get more antiseptic and packing and by then my tongue hurt so much everything I ate or drank, especially hot things. He said to stop the corsodine and to get my GP to check my recent blood tests. I phoned my GP who then saw me the same day (that’s the way it works where I live if you’re lucky enough to get through on the phone early enough). She said she thought I had oral thrush, probably brought on by the antibiotics I was given for the abscess, and gave me Daktarin gel, a supposedly painkilling mouth wash and a weeks supply of an anti fungal drug. Yesterday I went to the dentist to do my root canal work but he said the tooth was completely cracked and could not be saved and I he took it out there and then. He said my whole mouth was a real mess with the gums inflamed, all the skin stripped off my tongue and mouth ulcers and cold sores. He said he didn’t think it was oral thrush or he would have given me Daktarin. He said he would refer me to an oral specialist at the hospital but obviously I have no idea how long that will take. Meanwhile I am in a lot of pain. Any ideas what I can do ?

Hi lacemaker,

Sorry to hear about the pain you are in, sounds very difficult for you to know where to turn, given that you have received conflicting opinions from your two different Health Professionals.

Sadly, we are unable to give out specific medical advice to you but urge you to either seek out an opinion from a Pharmacist in how to manage your pain with simple analgesia at home. Alternatively, if your pain persists or you are still concerned, do not hesitate to go back to your GP to discuss it further.
