Seat Belt Toxicity?

Hi guys

My child of 11 years is quite anxious and chews on his seat belt often when we are in the car. I always tell him to stop, but he always reverts back to the habit. I noticed the seat belt sometimes shrivels up. He has been doing this for a few years now and I am worrying about the health affects of the fabric/oils in the belt. Are they toxic to his body/brain?
Thank you for your help.

Re: Seat Belt Toxicity?

Hi Phil Swift,

thanks for posting your question to our forum.

It is true that it is a real concern that there are chemicals and fire retardants in pretty much everything that we buy these days, it must be particularly worrying for you if your child is actually sucking on the seat belt.

We obviously can not give out any opinion or medical advice but would suggest you contact either the child's car-seat manufacturer to ask for their advice or if it is the actual car's seat belt, perhaps you should speak directly to the car manufacturer yourself?

If you are still worried, you may want to wrap something non toxic around the belt in the meantime until you have all the facts about this.

Hope this helps,

Regards
