multivitamins for hairloss?

I have a terrible problem of hair fall and I did consult a dermatologist and was in treatment for the past year. Along with the treatment I came across several websites one day, where people suggest having multivitamins help make a slight difference and improvement as there were cases of vitamin deficiencies. I also started to search for such health supplements and saw a few. I was wondering if somebody could advise me on this on which to buy and what all to consider?

Dear Daniel Brannum,
I also have a similar problem to yours and, because of a dermatologist that suggested me to take some zinc pills as a supplement for two entire months, my hair loss just got worse :( (zinc and other similar metals are nothing but toxic). Therefore, I strongly suggest you to have specific exams done in order to find out whether you have actual vitamin deficiencies or not, before taking supplements

I would suggest going with homeopathy treatment because sometime back I also had a hair breakage problem. I did treatment and counseling with a lot of doctors, but I could not find any improvement in my hair. So in the end, someone suggested me to take homeopathy treatment, it was beneficial for me and I helped stop the problem of hair loss within 1 month and also new hair started coming.

One of the best known vitamins for hair growth is a B-vitamin called biotin. Other B-vitamins help create red blood cells, which carry oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and hair follicles. These processes are important for hair growth.

You can get B-vitamins from many foods, including whole grains, almonds, meat, fish, seafood and dark, leafy greens.

Additionally, animal foods are the only good sources of vitamin B12. So if you’re following a vegetarian or vegan diet, consider taking a supplement.

I take multivitamin tablets often. I do not think they help a great deal with hair loss. I embrace my hair loss, i like it. My hair line is receding but i think sometimes someone looks better with a receding hair line and hair loss. There is this guy in the town where i am from, he wears wigs because he doesnt like having hair loss. To be honest he looks better without the wig. I believe Holland and Barrett offer something for hair loss. Although it costs over £100, its not guaranteed to make a difference either. Embrace your hair loss.

There are people who make a fashion statement after hairloss/losing their hair. My boss at work is bald: and it looks rather cool. My sister - on the otherhand - has suffered severe hairloss, yet won't cut her hair into a crop. I think she should, but she doesn't.

I don't think there is a magic cure for hairloss, but there are steps to reduce it:

1. Brush and comb hair gently
2. Don't wash your hair every day
3. Keep your hair in a style where it is easy to manage and makes the most of thin hair
4. Use hairloss shampoo
5. Take a supplement: although it won't "cure" the loss of hair
6. Realize some medications can result in hairloss and take accordingly
7. Wear wigs [properly fitted and styled] if your hairloss causes embarrassment: or even wig extentions

I am sure there are many more tips, but those are my ones.

We can solve these types of problems, but first, you need to know what you lack because if you do not lack the vitamin/mineral/supplement you are taking, taking a hair supplement just for the sake of it can do very little for hair development.

Hair loss, including anemia, alopecia, thyroid issues, diabetes, and lupus, may also be a symptom of an underlying health problem. Stress, drastic weight loss, trauma, pregnancy, certain cancer treatment, and nutritional deficiencies are other factors that can cause it. Bad nutrition is a major factor in hair loss, and some way to slow it down and maybe even avoid it will help correct any nutritional deficiency.

There are three main causes for hair loss – genes, aging, and nutrient deficiencies. There is little you can do about the first two, but improving your nutritional intake can definitely help you slow down and even stop hair loss. Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are important for both your overall health and the health of your hair. Studies indicate that that an unbalanced diet, poor food choices, and deficiency in some vitamins and minerals may cause hair thinning.

Here is a list of six vitamins and minerals that are vital to having thick, shiny, and richly colored hair:

1. Vitamin E A double-blind scientific study carried out at the University of Science in Malaysia concluded that taking vitamin E daily increased hair growth in balding men by 42%.

2. Iron Often premenopausal women suffer from anemia caused by a deficit of iron. One of the classic symptoms of this condition is hair loss and thinning. Additionally, a person with anemia finds the color of their hair changes and becomes dull. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends that men and post-menopausal women take 8 mg of iron per day.

3. Vitamin B12 In addition to contributing to the development of certain types of anemia, a deficiency of vitamin B12 causes your hair to thin and grey prematurely. The NIH reports the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of B12 for adults is 2.4 micrograms.

4. Zinc If you are not getting enough zinc in your diet, your hair is mostly likely dry and brittle, which leads to breakage, so your hair appears to be thinning. Additionally, zinc deficiencies cause your hair to lose its color and turn white. The RDA for zinc is 8 to 11 mg.

5. Vitamin C If you do not have enough vitamin C in your diet, your hair follicles are likely to become clogged, which leads to ingrown hairs and weakness of the hair so that it takes on a corkscrew shape. You can avoid vitamin C deficiency by ensuring you get 70 to 90 mg of this vitamin each day.

6. Vitamin B3 (niacin) One of the early signs of niacin, or vitamin B3, deficiency is the loss of hair. By ensuring you have the recommended daily allowance of this essential vitamin, which is 13 to 16 mg, you can maintain thick and full hair.

Other key nutrients for preventing hair loss are folic acid, biotin, magnesium, inositol, and sulfur.

Stop hair loss with proper nutrition

Making sure that you supplement your diet with these vitamins and minerals on a daily basis is one of the best things you can do to slow down hair loss and maintain the health of your remaining hair. We recommend taking a well-balanced high-quality multivitamin in order to reduce the rate of your hair loss.
