How to prevent arthritis from getting worse

Slowing the Progression of Osteoarthritis

Learn how to make healthy lifestyle choices to relieve joint discomfort and prevent OA from worsening.

Osteoarthritis (OA) was formerly thought to be a condition in which joints simply wore out due to a long and active life. However, research has revealed that OA is a multifaceted condition with numerous causes. Experts say it's not an unavoidable feature of aging, but rather the outcome of a complex set of circumstances, many of which may be altered or avoided. Here is some doctor advice for reducing the risk of OA or delaying the development of the disease.

Keep your weight in check

Weight gain puts extra strain on weight-bearing joints including the hips and knees. Each pound you acquire stresses your knees by nearly four pounds and puts six times more pressure on your hips. The additional stress wears down the cartilage that cushions these joints, which worsens over time.

Mechanical stress, however, is not the sole issue. Cytokines are proteins produced by fat tissue that induce inflammation throughout the body. Cytokines degrade tissue in the joints by changing the function of cartilage cells. Your body produces and releases more of these harmful proteins as you gain weight. Unless you're really overweight, dropping a few pounds can help relieve joint pain.

Nice Post,
Although losing weight can help improve health in many cases, it is not a guaranteed solution to all health problems. Weight loss can help improve conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes, and can also reduce the risk of developing some diseases. However, weight loss is not necessarily an effective treatment for all health problems, and it should always be discussed with a doctor before attempting a weight loss program.

I agree with this hightlighted post.

Also taking supplements designed for the joints is a good idea. Your local chemist - or drugstore - will supply such supplements. Do also avoid too heavy exercise, as these will pull on your joints and increase your pain.

Re: How to prevent arthritis from getting worse

Arthritis is a common condition that can cause pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the joints. If left untreated, arthritis can worsen over time, leading to further joint damage and disability. However, there are steps you can take to prevent arthritis from getting worse.
Exercise regularly: Exercise can help strengthen the muscles around the affected joints, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve flexibility and range of motion. Low-impact activities like walking, swimming, and yoga are great options.
Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight can put added stress on the joints, exacerbating arthritis symptoms. Maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce pain and slow the progression of arthritis.
Eat a healthy diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can provide the nutrients your body needs to support joint health and reduce inflammation. Avoid processed foods and excess sugar, which can contribute to inflammation.
Use assistive devices: Assistive devices like braces, splints, and canes can help support the affected joints and reduce pain. Talk to your doctor or physical therapist about the best options for your condition.
Consider alternative therapies: Alternative therapies like acupuncture, massage, and pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy have been shown to provide pain relief and improve joint function in some people with arthritis.

By taking these steps, you can help prevent arthritis from getting worse and improve your quality of life. Remember to always consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise or treatment program.
