self catheterisation

hi. I am going abroad for 5 months, that means a lot of single use catheters which I currentley use, I wondered if you could advise me on a multi use catheter and how they work,or can I buy them easily abroad with a prescription. Thanks Les Smith.

Re: self catheterisation

Dear Les,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I must admit this is not my area of specialty and I have had to do some research in order to best answer your question.

It really depends on where you are going on your holiday as to whether you will be able to obtain reputable catheters whilst abroad. Can you offer me a little more information about your trip?

I can fully appreciate your concern about the number of catheters you would need to take away. Which type do you currently use? The manufacturer themselves will usually be able to offer you advice regarding travelling abroad with their products. There are compact varieties available, which may take up less space.

In terms of multi use vs single use, I would advise you to have a discussion with your continence advisor. Do you have a local nurse or doctor who you can discuss this with? This website provides some useful information about the pros and cons of each: http://www.continenceproductadvisor.org ... tcatheters

Try this document from the Urostomy Association for more information about travelling abroad (http://www.nhs.uk/ipgmedia/national/uro ... 4pages.pdf). Whilst this mainly discusses stoma, there are some useful points such as radar keys and information about insurance which may help you.

If you did want to obtain your catheters abroad, I would strongly recommend taking enough catheters with you for your journey there and for a good few weeks until you can find a suitable source from a healthcare outlet.

I am sorry I cannot give you a more specific answer Les, however I feel a conversation with your current catheter provider will be more beneficial to you.

Kindest regards,

Justine
