Walking can be painful, as you have experienced, when OA of the knee is bone on bone. There are some options for managing the pain that you could explore with your GP, including a review of your pain-relieving medicines, applying heat or cold to the knee joint and wearing knee braces. Your GP may suggest a steroid injection, which can offer several weeks, or even months, of relief from a very painful joint.
It may also help to get the input of a physiotherapist (for exercises to keep the knee joint mobile) and an occupational therapist (who can advise on practical help, such as equipment).
The following Arthritis Care booklets offer more detail on these issues:
Managing pain: https://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/what-i ... aging-pain
Independent living: https://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/what-i ... -arthritis.
I hope this information is useful. If it would help to talk things over, you are very welcome to call the Arthritis Care Helplines 0808 800 4050.
Best wishes,

Again this is a recurring theme..please look at the innovations on my knee preservation.co.uk to see what is on offer to help with this common problem. This includes platelet rich plasma injections (please see the animation at http://www.arthrex.co.uk) to fat derived stem cell injections.

You may well be amenable to an offloading osteotomy which is the operation of choice for bone on bone arthritis. Please see http://www.osteotomyexpertgroup.com to find out more. There is a great animation.
Or maybe a partial knee resurfacing please look at the animation on http://hampshireknee.co.uk/ in the knee replacement section

Hope that helps..there is so much we can do.

Hi

Depending on the extent of the arthritis - physiotherapy can be a good option. You can be taught strengthening exercises to help support the knee and hip and core. The muscles can absorb some of the stress applied to the knee when walking thus reducing the symptoms you feel. Acupuncture can help reduce the pain in some cases and advice surrounding good footwear, pacing of activities and knee supports can also be of value.

There has been lots of fantastic advice surrounding OA management on this forum and it doesn't always have to result in a knee replacement...I really hope you find an option that works for you.

Regards
Nicola
