45yr + examinations

Is it a recommendation that men over 45yr undergo a prostrate examination?

Re: 45yr + examinations

Hi

it's a good question, and different people will give you different answers.

A prostate examination is mainly done for 1 of 2 purposes:

1. if you have urinary symptoms, to check the size of your prostate to help decide how to manage the symptoms.

2. as part of assessing someone's risk of prostate cancer - usually in combination with a blood test called PSA.

If you have urinary symptoms (unless they are mild and not causing bother), then it is worth seeing a doctor for assessment. If not, then there is no benefit from having a routine prostate examination, especially at such a young age. The question of whether to have a PSA test is far more complex and controversial - and I'm sure you will see discussed in other areas of this online clinic.

Hope that helps - and saves you from an unnecessary examination!

if you are otherwise fit and well and concerned about prostate cancer then the PSA test is a reasonable option.
It can often find cancer that didnt need treatment but just might save your life.
worth looking at the prostate cancer uk website to see the risks and benefits.
ultimately if you are worried get it checked

I fully agree
Almost All diseases are more common as people age.
if you don't smoke, exercise regularly, and are healthy then there are a few screening tests that might be advised.
