Needing to pee more

I have recently started having to go to the loo more - particularly during the night, even when I haven't drunk much prior to going to bed.

Is this something that I should be concerned about or is it just an age thing? I'm only 43!

Hi Gary

so you have developed 'nocturia' - the fancy medical name for passing urine at night!

This is a fascinating problem, to sad people like me!

It has a number of causes - almost always entirely harmless - but very bothersome at times.

If you are frequent day and night - you may have an overactive bladder - this is almost always associated with urgency - a desperate need to pass urine at times, to the point you worry about not making it? If so, consider decreasing caffeinated drinks / alcohol intake, but if not improving and causing bother, go to discuss with your GP.

If it is just peeing at night - at your age, very unlikely to be your prostate. It is probably worth completing a bladder diary - also called a frequency volume chart - for 3 days - measuring intake and urine output - and then taking that with you to discuss with your GP. I would want to dip your urine to make sure you have not got invisible traces of blood, or signs of diabetes or a urine infection. It can take a bit of detective work.

If these tests are normal, then you have to decide if the frequency of urinatio is causing you bother - if not, you can leave alone - but if it is, you may be prescribed treatment by your GP or possibly referred to a urologist.

I hope that is useful.

I support the use of patient based diaries as a very effective way to objectively document your symptoms in a structured manner that can often highlight the your fluids are poor or excessive.
As a continence advisor I often found that patients who completed a diary had already realised what changes they needed to address when the opportunity came to review the diary together.
