Psychological effect of food allergies on children

My daughter has suffered from multiple food allergies since she was 6 months old and is now 8 and a half. She manages the food side of things very well but is finding it harder now with regards to her peers and her sister who don't have allergies. We are under the care of St Thomas' children's allergy clinic which is excellent. However where could I get advice to help her cope with the psychological effect of having allergies? Many thanks

Hello Julia h

Thanks for your post. It is a very important and difficult aspect of allergies isn't it?

St Thomas' had, or indeed may still have, a psychologist attached to the department, so it might be useful to speak to your allergy team there as it could be more focused towards your daughters needs. If they no longer have one they will certainly be able to p oink you in the direction of someone who is interested in this area of psychology.

Hope that helps.

Hello Julia. At St Thomas', the psychological impact on patients with allergies has been recognised and there is a psychologist attached to the department. Please contact the department (there should be a number on your clinic letter) who can liaise with the doctor that you saw to arrange a referral for your daughter. The psychologist also runs workshops every few months for groups of patients (of similar ages) with allergies.
