Can anything lighten age spots on my face?

I have a cluster of age spots on one side of my face, some of which are quite dark.

From the research I've done it doesn't seem that there is much I can do about them apart from maybe having laser therapy or skin peels which I would rather avoid, if possible, as from what I've read they don't always work, do not permanently remove the spots or, even have potential side effects which could make my skin look worse.

I've read there are creams which may help to lighten the spots, if not remove them, but there are so many on the market I don't know where to start. It also seems some could have side effects which would make the spots even darker. Does anybody have any recommendations?

I've considered seeing a dermatologist for their advice but just a consultation is over £200. Would it be worth it? Would they be able to prescribe safe prescription creams which are not on the market?

Applying a prescription bleaching cream (hydroquinone) alone or with retinoids (tretinoin) and a mild steroid can gradually fade the spots over several months.
