psoriasis

My daughter suffers with severe Psoriasis , it has now got to the stage where she is no longer going out unless absolutley nesscessary,
She is now 23 and has had it since she was 14 ( it just appeared ), it covers her torso, her genital area, her hair, its in all her nails and now spreading down her legs, we have tried every potion and lotion going and nothing seems to be working, i admit i know stress is a big factor in Psoriasis and yes she suffers with this too but its a viscious cycle. Help !!

Re: psoriasis

Dear Trish,

thank you. I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. Usually psoriasis is easy to manage but sometimes it can be very challenging! It sounds like your daughter may benefit from UVB phototherapy and/or systemic treatments. You can see my other posts here (or on my website) about psoriasis treatments including systemic and biologics treatments. New treatment for psoriasis are also being developed as we speak and I tweet about them as they become available (if it is of help).

I hope this is helpful.
With best wishes,

Re: psoriasis

I agree with Dr Alexandroff's advice- please let your daughter know she can be optimistic about treatment there are many options for getting psoriasis under very good control, many more than there used to be a decade ago, and it's a question of choosing one which works for her.

Re: psoriasis

Thank you for taking the time to post and I am disconcerted to hear that your daughter will not go out because of her psoriasis. There is no doubt that psoriasis can have profound effects on psychological well being and that needs to be addressed. This is just as important as trying to control her psoriasis. I would usually recommend review by a clinical psychologist with an interest in skin to discuss coping mechanisms such as CBT.

If creams are no longer working then I agree with Dr Alexandroff that we need to look at other methods of treatment. The next stage would usually be light treatments (phototherapy) - often with UVB. Failing this, tablet treatments can be considered.

I think the bottom line is that she requires specialist intervention to address both the psychological and physical aspects of psoriasis.

I wish her the very best of luck.

Kind regards,

Anjali
