Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Hello

I recently had a patch test and discovered an allergy to Codamidopropyl Betaine, which is a surfactant used in shampoos and shower gels. I've managed to find a shampoo without it in, but haven't found a shower gel yet and soaps tend to dry my skin out. I'm also trying to find out whether my usual non-bio liquid capsules and fabric conditioner contain it, but the labelling on the packaging is dire so I am waiting for some information from the manufacturer about it.

Has anyone else had any experience with this allergy and if so can anyone give me any names of products to avoid or products that are free from it? Apparently it's not a common allergy so I'm struggling to find any information about it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you
Kathryn

Re: Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Kathryn,

Sounds like it could be a bit of an issue for you especially with regards to poor labelling of products. I do hope the manufacturers can be of some help. Please keep us updated with any information they give you.

I wonder if you might be better off to try naturally occurring products, sold within shops such as Lush and many places online? I cannot guarantee that they will not contain this product specifically but it might be another option for you to look at

I do hope that someone may be able to give you some help regarding your allergy, keep in touch with us!

Re: Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Thanks for the reply Rosy!

I never thought of Lush, and I've been online to look at some of their shower products and most of them don't contain it so thank you! I'm going to go in when I'm in town and review them re how fragranced they are etc to see if any of them would be suitable as I also have Atopic Eczema.

I've just had a root around a local supermarket and found that 'Pear's' products don't contain it, so am going to try the shower gel and two soaps and see how I go with that, too.

In regards to the labelling of the laundry products, I haven't had a reply from the manufacturer so will be chasing them up tomorrow! I will keep you posted.

Thanks again
Kathryn

Re: Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Thanks for your reply!

Glad I could be of help, personally I always use Lush products as my skin is really sensitive and the ingredients of many products read like a periodic table! Terrifies me! I also moisturise my children with olive oil to avoid harsh chemicals on delicate skin.

Hope you find out some more information very soon.

Also do keep an eye on our freebies/e-voucher pages as we quite often have specialist products relating to skin to give away.

Re: Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Dear Kathryn,
I have just been diagnosed with an allergy to Cocamidopropyl betaine which seems to be in every toiletry that I own. Please can you tell me the name of the shampoo that you found? I have been reading the back of 100's products in Boots (& online) and can't find anything suitable.

I'll have to start looking for shower gels soon. Perhaps we can compare notes?

Thanks in advance for your help.
