Recently I've become super allergic to my best friends cats. I need tips on what I could try or do to help alleviate my symptoms so I can actually be around my bestie! Thanks friends!

Hello and welcome to our forums. We also have a cat and my daughter, who's asthmatic and has hay fever /dust allergies, is slightly allergic to our cat, but only when she spends lots of time having her on her lap or letting her into her bedroom!!! I certainly don't have all the answers but if Alice keeps her out of the bedroom and doesn't pet her too much she seems OK. Hopefully other members may have some more useful tips ......

First of all Skin prick allergy test will give an answer whether you are allergic to cats or not. Sometimes people are allergic to House dust mites that cat carries on its fur but not to cats. If you have a true allergy to cats than I would say its better to find another home for your pet. If your symptoms are mild taking antihistamine tablet before you go to visit someone with cats can help. If you have severe symptoms, than you may think about desensitisation treatment. Even after desensitising we do not advise to have a cat at home. The treatment is done to prevent reactions during accidental exposure to cat allergen in transport, or when visiting someone who has cats. Cat allergen is very potent it persists in the environment after the pet has gone for another year and can cause symptoms.
