PCOS

My 19 year old daughter has suffered debilitating heavy periods for several years and has a 13mm cyst on one of her ovaries. She is currently undergoing tests for PCOS as also has issues with inability to maintain healthy weight, food cravings, facial hair, acne and mood swings. Taking Yasmin has had a moderate improvement on her skin and regulating the timing of her periods but has had no improvement with the pain or flow.

Firstly - is this is a large cyst in the scale of things?
What are the benefits/side effects of metformin and can it be taken with the contraceptive pill or should we explore a contraceptive implant or coil?
Finally if she is diagnosed with PCOS then how can this be managed with diet - what specificfoods are beneficial and also detrimental to the condition?

Many thanks for your help

Re: PCOS

1: No the cyst is very small and could be normal transient ovulatory activity at that size. PCOS does not cause pain.
2: Metformin may help to regulate the cycle and it can be taken alongside other medical treatments. Its main side effects are low blood sugar and stomach upset. If irregular bleeding is an issue a progesterone coil will help but an implant or injection will not.
3: A low glycaemic index approach to her diet may help.
