Is rosacea hereditary?

Guest post from talkhealth community
My mum and my nan both have red cheeks and visible veins. I think they have rosacea although they haven't been diagnosed with it. I wonder if it's hereditary at all? I am 23 at the moment but I don't think I have any symptoms.

Thank you

Re: Is rosacea hereditary?

Hi there,

Thanks for your question.

A tendency towards rosacea may well be hereditary, so if a family member has it, you may have a higher chance of developing it, but that doesn't mean you will. It's certainly not inevitable and it's thought that rosacea is caused partly by genetics and partly by lifestyle.

We can't change our genetics and no one will be able to predict whether or not you will develop it. I find it more helpful to focus on avoiding the modifiable risk factors that we know can contribute to the dvelopment of rosacea. Protect your sun from UV(which has been implicated in rosacea) by using a daily broad spectrum sunscreen, don't smoke and keep alcohol to a minimum. Make sure your diet is healthy and low in sugary foods.

I hope that is helpful!

Best wishes,

Dr Emma
