Poo leaks!

My 9 year old son occasionally - around 3-4 weeks apart - soils himself, but "didn't feel it". Or gets a sudden urge, apparently without prior warning. What treatment is available?? Usual BMs are late afternoon or evenings and stools are frequently soft / easy to pass but enormous, unflushable logs.
We have discussed this with GP but no action has been offered!

Re: Poo leaks!

Hi. While it will be important for your GP to rule out any physical health difficulties, it may also be psychological. Is your son putting off going to the toilet? Is he ignoring the sensation that he needs to go because he would rather be doing something else, or because it's become quite distressing and/or uncomfortable when he does go now. It might be important to go back to reminding him to go to the toilet regularly or rewarding him for making the time to go. He might tell you that he doesn't need to go, and perhaps he won't physically feel the sensation, but it could be important to encourage him to spend some time sitting on the toilet anyway because perhaps he's lost that ability to listen to his body. It's important that this all stays positive and not stressful for him, so please only use encouragement and rewards and have these conversations away from any siblings so that he doesn't feel ashamed. This issue isn't that uncommon for his age so with the right encouragement he is likely to develop better bowel habits again.

Re: Poo leaks!

Development of good bowel habits is important

Can you please download Bristol Stool scale from google and keep a diary of his stool frequency and type of stool he is having from the chart

if he is passing type 1-3 then he is constipated and leak may be due to constipation and overflow incontinence

In that case he will need treatment for constipation which GP can initiate

Thank you
