bleeding
My partner frequently has bleeding after bowel movements. He says he has had this since his late teens. He is now 50. He sometimes has loose bowel movements but not sure if this is related. Could this be haemorrhoids or an anal fissure? I cant persuade him to go to the GP, its also really hard to get an appointment now. Any thoughts?

Re: bleeding
Hi Carol
Haemorrhoids are probably the commonest cause of bleeding - the blood is usually bright red and mainly on the paper rather than in the poo. Bleeding from a fissure normally causes quite a lot of pain when going for a poo.
If his bleeding is unchanged for 30 years or more then the good news is that it is unlikely to be anything serious. However I would still recommend getting him checked out by the GP - and particularly if the bleeding has gotten worse recently or if the occasional loose bowel movements are a newer symptom.
Hope this helps!
