I feel so embarrassed but whenever I have a bigger dinner within 30 minutes or less I get really chronic pain and have to dash to the loo and it really prevents me from going out for meals any suggestions please?

Hi Jube123

This could be related to the gastroenterology colic reflex which causes the bowel to need to empty shortly after eating and can occur with foods that are higher in fats - or large portion sizes of rich meals and can be enhanced with people who have been diagnosed with IBS. Not eating is not an option though - so what I would advise is for you to ask your GP for a referral to a registered dietitian to help you to manage your current symptoms with food. A dietitian can also look to see if you have any food intolerances causing symptoms.

Kind regards

Julie

Hi, As you've used IBS as your subject then I'm assuming you have already had a diagnosis of IBS from your GP? If you haven't, then please do speak to your GP. If you have, then yes eating a bigger meal than normal, particularly if it is rich, which meals in restaurants often are, can cause difficulties. Your GP may be able to prescribe you antispasmodic drugs. Otherwise when you eat out it might help to ensure that you eat the same amount as normal (regardless of how much you are served), and that you stick to foods that you know you can tolerate.
