I often get a spasm in my back passage is this related to a bowel issue and why does it happen

It can be.

Does the spasm occur when you are going for a poo? If so, it could be caused by a small tear (anal fissure).

Another possibility is something that goes by the name of 'proctalgia fugax' (which comes from the Greek for 'a fleeting pain in the back passage' - honestly!). Proctalgia fugax is thought to be due to the muscles of the back passage temporarily going into spasm and is a condition that causes episodes of sudden, severe anal pain that last for a few minutes at a time.
