scar creams
Hi,
I came across a scar cream by (not sure if allowed here to name brands but a well known one B**ts) scar reduction cream. It seems to be a silicone type of material and I think it has been effective on red marks left from oven burns and a bad tear in my calf from a thorn. How long would using such a cream be effective for- there must be a point in time beyond which the scar won't fade any further? Thanks

Re: scar creams
Hello
I advice my patients to use silicone gels very thinly to the affected area to help hydrate the scar thus reducing the discomfort of itchiness and improve the scar healing within three to six months period. If no changes then I suggest you can stop. Using a non perfume moisturiser at least twice daily or as often as necessary is as good as using silicone gels. The redness is a part of the healing process and will fade in time depending on the age, skin type and the after care from when the injury happened. It is worth considering using sunscreen SPF50+ to prevent the scar becoming permanently darker than your normal skin tone until the scar is matured. The scar usually matures after 12 to 18 months.

Re: scar creams
Thanks, very useful, though didn't know that tanning could make the scare stay permanently darker- probabbly too late for me but good to know this. Thanks.
