Ocular rosacea - need to see a specialist?
I've had rosacea for some years and, although it only flares up with papules from time to time, I do regularly flush a lot. For the past few months I have had very uncomfortable eyes - itchy, gritty and sore. I saw an optician yesterday who checked my eyes for dryness using the Tear Break Up Time method and the result was it took three seconds for the liquid to evaporate. I understand that the evaporation time for normal eyes is ten seconds. So, they are very dry.
I will be seeing my GP on Monday and would like to know if you feel it would be wise to see an ophthalmologist, rather than continuing under my GP, if there is a chance that my eye problem is ocular rosacea.

Dear Frances,
thank you for your question. I am so sorry to hear about your problem.
Ocular rosacea can happen in patients with skin rosacea. Yours symptoms suggest that you may suffer from ocular rosacea. I am not an ophthalmologist but I wonder if you may also have dry eye problem.
You certainly need to see your GP. Some GP are well trained in ophthalmology. However if your GP feels that your problem is out of his area of experience/ knowledge he or she should refer you to ophthalmologist.
I hope this is helpful.
