is there really such a thing as a hair regrowth potion or medication as we often see such remedy's advertised in the press and online.

Thanks for your question and like you, I am also very skeptical of the miracle cures we often see advertised for our hair, skin and nails! Personally, I don't think there is any such thing as a "regrowth potion" that is going to give us all thick, luscious locks.
That said, there is scientific data to support the use of minoxidil 5% (Regaine) in certain types of hair loss - namely androgenetic alopecia in both men and women. Treatment should be carried out for at least 4-6 months and ideally twice daily to assess response.
There isn't really anything out there that will regrow all the hair that has been lost or prevent hair loss forever, I'm afraid.
