I read that there is a new type of MRI scan that is more accurate than normal scans for indicating prostate cancer and could avoid unnecessary or reduce the biopsy requirement testing and it seems they cost about £350/400 per scan which seems relatively cost effective and eliminate painful procedures. Is this accurate and will NICE be allowing in all hospitals?

NICE Guidelines currently reccomend that an MRI scan is performed prior to biopsies of the prostate if cancer is suspected. Although it can sometimes fail to detect all significant cancer it is more accurate than standard biopsies. In addition biopsies would be targeted and taken via the perineal region (between rectum and testicles) under anaeshethic.
